“Victor Lemus and his crew are angels!” said Mike Fallon, Construction Director for Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County. “We call him up, let him know that we are ready for the shingles to go on our roofs, and he and his crew appear and make it happen.”

In 2010, Victor Lemus approached Habitat Bucks and shared that in spite of a downturn in the economy, his business was doing very well and he wanted to give back to the community; was there something he could do to help Habitat Bucks? Since that initial conversation, Lemus Construction has donated the labor and roofing materials for 10 Habitat homes, and as also done the plywood, sub-roofing on some of those homes as well. “These donations are tremendous, and the value is magnified because it helps to keep costs low for our Habitat homeowners,” said Florence Kawoczka, Executive Director of Habitat Bucks. “We value our partnership with Victor Lemus, and are so grateful for the expertise he brings to his work and to our mission of building safe, decent and affordable homes.”

Allentown, PA - Kelly O’Shea Carney, Ph.D., CMC, Executive Director of the Phoebe Ministries Center of Excellence in Dementia Care was one of 17 people to be appointed to the Pennsylvania Alzheimer’s Disease State Planning Committee by Governor Tom Corbett in April.

Established through an Executive Order by Corbett in February, the committee will work to create a state plan to address the growing Alzheimer’s disease crisis in Pennsylvania. They will examine the needs and research the trends of Pennsylvania’s Alzheimer’s population. The committee has until February 2014 to develop a planned approach for Pennsylvania relating to Alzheimer’s disease and other related brain disorders.

“It is a tremendous honor to be appointed to the Pennsylvania Alzheimer's Disease State Planning Committee,” says Dr. Carney. “As the numbers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease grows, the need for services and supports for those living in Pennsylvania will also grow.”

The committee appointees include representatives from various state agencies as well as those personally impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. Brian Duke, Secretary of Aging, will serve as chair of the committee. The majority and minority chairpersons of the Aging and Youth and Public Health and Welfare Committees of the Senate; and the majority and minority chairpersons of the Aging and Older Adult Services and Health Committees of the House of Representatives will also serve as designated members of the Committee.

Dr. Carney continues, “I feel privileged to be invited to serve on this important committee to plan for the needs of older Pennsylvanians affected by dementia. As a Geropsychologist, I have witnessed firsthand the devastation that this disease creates for individuals and their families and I am eager to play a role in planning strategies to support those who are affected by this terrible disease.”

Dr. Carney was hired by Phoebe Ministries in August 2012 to implement the organization’s Center for Excellence in Dementia Care. A leader in dementia care and education, Phoebe operates three of only seven dementia facilities in Pennsylvania recognized by The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America for the Excellence in Care Program of Distinction.

A licensed psychologist with a specialty in geriatrics and a certified Geriatric Care Manager, Dr. Carney has worked in a variety of healthcare and community settings providing behavioral health services to older adults and their caregivers. She has provided training at the state and national level to professional caregivers on issues related to behavioral health, dementia and aging.

Dr. Carney serves as the co-chair of the American Psychological Association Committee on Aging and is the past President of the Board for the Pennsylvania Behavioral Health and Aging Coalition.
